The “Malden Eats” dinner celebration heads to Tornado Restaurant & Lounge (2 Florence St.), a fairly new Malden restaurant serving “Asian-inspired tapas,” on Tuesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 781-388-3988 and reference the “Malden Reads” event. Two of the co-owners, Shanie Leung and Jenny Le, met at Malden High more than a decade ago. The duo saved their pennies from after-school jobs to open up their dream restaurant. And, yes, the name was inspired by Malden High’s “Golden Tornadoes” mascot. Sounds like a perfect storm.

Malden Reads kickoff celebrates reading, collaboration and community
For the first time in the eight-year history of the Malden Reads program, the 2018 kickoff event was held at Malden High School on Feb. 15. Usually staged in the Converse Memorial Building of the Malden Public Library, the kickoff emphasized the intergenerational nature of the book choice, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, a young adult novel that can be enjoyed and appreciated by all ages. MATV, Malden’s Media Center, is pleased to present a video from a special author visit last year to the Malden Public Schools. On June 1, 2017, Malden Reads welcomed author Cammie McGovern to a series of events in Malden. McGovern is the author of Just My Luck, a companion book for the middle grades, selected to accompany the themes of last season’s Malden Reads book selection, A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman. Just My Luck tells the story of a fourth grade boy who learns to cope with difficult family situations, such as his brother’s autism and his father’s head injury, through his kindhearted spirit and generosity.. Malden Reads hosted a reception for McGovern at the Malden High School Writers Den, a comfortable place where students can immerse themselves in writing creatively and receive tutoring. Malden Reads kicks off dining series at Henry’s Patio
Due to the snowstorm on March 14, the Malden Reads Community Dinner at Henry’s Patio has been re-scheduled to Tuesday, April 4. Plan to join fellow community members on this date for an evening of great food, company and conversation as part of the Malden Reads 2017 community dining series. Henry’s Patio is located at 80 Broadway in Malden. Reservations must be made by April 2. If you enjoy a relaxed, casual atmosphere and a full bar, this will be an event you can’t miss. The event will feature a limited menu with a choice of a chicken, steak tips, or haddock prepared in a variety of ways by the chef, an appetizer, side vegetables and dessert. The cost is $20, not including tax, beverages, and tip. Meats and fish are procured from local quality markets such as McKinnon’s, the Maplewood Meat Market and the Maplewood Fish Market.
