With our seven deadly picks for Halloween, we promise plenty of tricks and treats throughout October.15057279203_d93aa80328_z

  1. MATV’s HAUNTED STUDIO: Coming in at No. 7 is Malden Media Center’s annual event the Haunted Studio. Kids and parents from the Malden Community trick or treat their way through MATV’s creepy maze of spooks held on Halloween weekend.
  1. OLD SCHOOL GAME SHOW: At No. 6 is Old School Game Show’s Halloween edition in Cambridge. Michael D’Angelo, host of the devilishly camp Old School Game Show, serves up 1970s-era slasher-flick sensibility in this killer live theater/game show cacophony which includes Boston’s burlesque queen Ginny Nightshade. Based on D’Angelo and Nightshade’s previous Halloween creations, Old School Game Show deserves two Freddy Krueger-style thumbs up. 7 p.m. Saturday, October 15.   1. HAMMOND CASTLE: For 29 years, this Gloucester haunt transforms into one of the most spooktacular haunted houses in New England. Unfortunately, Hammond Castle announced that 2016 is the last year they will host their must-see haunted nights event. Inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr. built this breathtaking medieval-style castle in the late 1920s. Marrying late in life, the eccentric gentleman used the mansion as a laboratory and private residence until his death in 1956. In fact, he’s buried in a crypt tucked away on the property and is rumored to be among the several wayward spirits who haunt the house. 7-11 p.m. Fridays & Saturdays, Oct. 14-Oct. 29. ROCK AND SHOCK: Blood bros Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard13987568_10157279055340099_1289944977119190957_o celebrate the 20th anniversary of the seminal ghost-face slasher flick Scream at the three-day Rock and Shock convention at the haunted Palladium in Worcester. Courtney Gains and John Franklin, both Chidren of the Corn alums, round out this macabre music fest featuring monsters, music and mayhem. Who knew “the Woo” could be so cool? Friday, Oct. 14-Sunday, Oct. 16. Worcester Palladium, 261 Main St. in Worcester.
  1.  HAUNTING AT WITCH HILL: This Victorian-themed ghost story event showcases Peirce Farm at Witch Hill, a historic property that earned its witchy moniker because of its ties to Salem Witch Trials victim Mary Eastey. In fact, Witch Hill is where Rebecca Nurse’s sister hid in fear before being carted off to the gallows in 1692. Victorian-era garb is encouraged and organizers at Essex Heritage are planning an exclusive Edgar Allan Poe-style bash in the property’s barn. 6:30-10:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 at Peirce Farm in Witch Hill.
  1. 1THE RISE OF THE JACK O’ LANTERNS: This fall, RISE of the Jack O’Lanterns is debuting in Boston after sold-out events in New York and Los Angeles. With four dates to see this iconic fall event, RISE will bring out the Halloween spirit in visitors of all ages indoors at the Boston Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center from October 27-30. “What’s New? Malden” co-hosts Sam Baltrusis and Sharon Fillyaw will be your ghostly tour guides with over 5,000 hand-carved illuminated jack o’lanterns on display. Thursday, Oct. 27-Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center in South Boston.
  1. ghostshipharborGHOST SHIP HARBOR: Topping the list of our seven deadly picks is GHOST SHIP HARBOR in Quincy. A zombie outbreak has driven humanity to seek sanctuary on the USS Salem, and you can experience the fear firsthand at either Contagion, where the virus is trying to be contained, or The Plague, which reveals that even the open sea isn’t safe from the undead.  At the third attraction, The Paranormal VIP tour, managed by author and paranormal researcher Sam Baltrusis, discusses the USS Salem’s ghostly denizens that continue to harry paranormal investigators. And of course, there are the real ghosts that roam the passageways of the vessel. Ghost Ship Harbor at the USS Salem, 739 Washington Street in Quincy.

Here’s a sneak peek of our spooktacular Halloween edition of “What’s New?” The Halloween-themed show will be available to public access stations across the state by DVD or digital download on October 1.

By Rachel Sorlien, Malden Juneteenth Committee (special to Neighborhood View) It may have rained all day, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of hundreds of attendees at Malden’s 6th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration this past Saturday, June 17th. In a quick pivot and with the steadfast support of Superintendent Ligia Noriega- Murphy and custodial staff at the Ferryway School, the event location was moved indoors from Lincoln Commons to the Ferryway School. Alexandria Onuoha blends dance, psychology, and activism in her quest for equity

Malden resident Alexandria Onuoha has a multifaceted approach toward her social justice work.  From psychology to dance to advocacy, Onuoha channels her passions into working for equity and equality in diverse ways for the local BIPOC community. A PhD student in Applied Developmental Psychology at Suffolk University, Onuoha is the Director of Political Advocacy at Black Boston, a nonprofit community organization that fights to end racial inequities while uplifting the creativity and solidarity of the Black community of Greater Boston. She is the founder of ACO Styles,  a business that aims to give advanced meaning to the complexities and excellence that comes with being Black, by centering Black women and girls through developmental science, dance, and fashion She is also a dancer; she performed at the Urban Media Arts studio for the virtual Juneteenth celebration last month. “I’m really interested in how fashion and dancing come together to make sure that women and youth of color feel their best, as well as how these different art forms and counseling come together.
