TV SHOW: “What’s New? Malden” for the holidays

The New England region forecast for winter predicts icy temperatures and continuous snow storms, unlike last year’s mild weather. Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) urges thousands of working families, elders and other residents struggling to make ends meet to sign up immediately for fuel assistance. On Tuesday, November 1, ABCD covering Boston, Brookline, Newton and the greater Mystic Valley area (Malden, Medford, Everett, Melrose, Stoneham, Winchester and Woburn) will initiate its seasonal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Last year over 26,000 households received ABCD Fuel Assistance. Once again program officials encourage all those who may qualify for fuel assistance to apply before freezing temperatures set in. As the cost of living escalates – including housing, food, and other utilities – families are barely getting by. In fact, too many are falling behind and into debt. In this special Halloween edition of Neighborhood View’s “What’s New?” Go behind the scenes of one of the state’s most haunted locations, the USS Salem in Quincy, and learn about world-class haunted house attraction called Ghost Ship Harbor. Travel back in time with Salem Witch Trials expert Kathryn Rutkowski who will talk about the spooktacular new event called The Haunting at Witch Hill in Topsfield. Co-hosts Sam Baltrusis and Sharon Fillyaw chat with “Halloween Nation” author Lesley Bannatyne about trends associated with All Hallow’s Eve. The monthly program airs 6:30 p.m. Fridays, Noon Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays on MATV’s Channel 3 on Comcast, 28 (Verizon). The special Halloween-themed edition will be available to public access stations across the state by DVD or digital download on October 1, 2016.

Historical haunts in Malden? It’s a no-brainer. As Halloween creeps around the corner, Neighborhood View coordinator and “Ghosts of Boston: Haunts of the Hub” author Sam Baltrusis left no gravestone unturned in search of Malden’s most haunted. The city boasts a bone-chilling assortment of ghostly hot spots rumored to be stomping grounds for spirits … and not one of those El Diablo concoctions at Ferry Street Food & Drink. Speaking of the new restaurant formerly occupied by watering holes like Jimmy O’Keefe’s, the Shamrock Inn and No 9 Ale House, Ferry Street Food & Drink (118 Ferry St.) made headlines last summer about a resident ghost rumored to still claim his bar stool in the afterlife. According to lore, the left-behind ghost looked like John Candy’s “Uncle Buck” character. The spirit supposedly slipped and died in the basement when the space was Jimmy O’Keefe’s.
