Mayor Gary Christenson signed an agreement with Greg Lamb and Sandi Silk of Jefferson Apartment Group on Thursday, Feb. 20. The deal? Malden Square’s Government Center site located at 200 Pleasant Street. The project includes 245 units of housing, 17,250 square feet of commercial space and 314 parking spaces, according to a release. “This historical day has been a long time coming,” says Mayor Christenson. “The City Council and I are enthusiastically moving forward on the community’s goal of revitalizing the downtown.”

Malden Reads: One City, One Book

What if all of Malden read the same book? Malden Reads is a community reading program that seeks to answer that question. Organized by community groups, city leaders, and residents, in collaboration with the Malden Public Library and Malden Access TV, the program invites the community to read the same book and participate in a series of events related to the book’s themes. The goal is to encourage reading, promote the library and other city resources, and build community. The opening celebration is Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Converse Memorial Building. The book? “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” a science journalist who brought to light an important person and issue through her curiosity and reporting. The Malden Reads launch kicks off Malden Access Television’s (MATV) citizen journalism project.

Become a Neighborhood View citizen journalist

Malden Access Television (MATV) will be initiating a new Citizen Journalism project in Malden this spring. Through this initiative, MATV will train and support local citizens to cover subjects and issues in their own neighborhood using simple media tools such as mobile phones and social media. Citizens will be trained to upload their stories to a website linked to MATV’s website. Stories can include text, audio only, still photos and/or video clips. The program is intended to tie in with this year’s Malden Reads book selection “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot, herself a science journalist who brought to light an important person and issue through her curiosity and reporting. Citizen journalism is intended to move citizens of a community into action around issues, events, & initiatives facing them in their own community. MATV was formally established in 1988 as a non-profit (501c-3) membership based organization. Under the terms of the Malden cable television license, MATV is responsible for the management and operation of the Public, Education and Government Access channels for the City of Malden.
