“What’s New? Malden” TV show launches in April

MATV’s Neighborhood View is producing the pilot for a new 30-minute magazine-style TV show called “What’s New? Malden.” Hosted by Sam Baltrusis, coordinator of MATV’s Neighborhood View, the monthly program will showcase Malden’s new restaurants, cutting-edge businesses and positive news emerging from the city. Whether we like or not, Malden is changing. This monthly program will shine a spotlight on the city’s evolving landscape and will highlight the events and players responsible for Malden’s growth. First stop? El Potro on Highland Avenue. Here’s a sneak peek of Ming’s Seafood Restaurant on Pleasant Street and an interview with Jodie Zalk from Malden Reads. Zalk navigates the many events slotted for the “One City, One Book” program in April.

El Potro hosts community dinner on March 22

Malden Reads is excited to announce the second edition of the Malden Eats Community Dining series. We invite you to share a convivial meal, at the same time exploring themes related to this year’s Malden Reads selection, “The Martian” by Andy Weir, using “Table Talk” cards as discussion prompts. You do not need to have read the book yet to attend. On Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m., join fellow Maldonians for a fun and relaxing meal of authentic Mexican food at El Potro. Armed with several locations in the region including Somerville and Lowell, Malden’s El Potro is the largest venue of the three and is located at 156 Highland Ave. The restaurant’s name means “pony” in Spanish. “We want to become a part of the fabric of Malden,” El Potro’s owner Elias Interiano said. “We look forward to getting to know the community and becoming a destination spot for families and friends.” The menu for the March 22 dinner will be à la carte from a fixed menu. Malden Reads is excited to announce the return of the Malden Eats Community Dining series.  We invite you to share a convivial meal, at the same time exploring themes related this year’s Malden Reads selection, “The Martian” by Andy Weir. PHOTOS: Fresh Truck mobile market hits Malden

Fresh Truck, a re-purposed school bus that carries fresh and affordable fruits, vegetables, whole grain products and more, made a pit stop at the Malden YMCA on Thursday, Jan. 14. Christina Murphy, the Mass in Motion Coordinator for the City of Malden, negotiated the pop up and the team behind the mobile market, including CEO Josh Trautwein, rolled into Malden from 3 to 5 p.m. last week. Elizabeth Scorsello, a reporter with MATV’s Neighborhood View and photographer for the citizen journalism site, said the converted bus was packed. “It was so cold,” Scorsello explained. “But it was impressive how many people showed up to the market.” –Photographs by Elizabeth Scorsello

Sousaku Bistro: Japanese Tappas and Bar in Malden

Sousaku Bistro, newly opened, is the collaboration of three warm and welcoming friends, chef Boky Chu and Malden resident, manager Lewis Lai and bartender Aiden Pan.  Sousaku means “creativity” in Japanese and is expressed in the menu and signature dish, Sousaku Sushi Pizza that is served on a bed of thin rice pressed with seaweed, coated with tomato paste and topped with choices like broccoli, zucchini and eggplant, shrimp, scallop and tuna, crawfish, or salmon and pineapple, and a layer of cheese and deep fried. Donor organizations honor Malden’s non-profit Bread of Life

Community Cooks of Somerville held a “Just for You” event at the Charlesgate Yacht Club in Cambridge to celebrate their most loyal donors and partner organizations. Community Cooks coordinates a network of over 780 volunteers from 61 Boston-area cities and towns, who offer free home cooked meals to vulnerable citizens by supporting 35 direct-service partner agencies. Malden-based Bread of Life is one of their direct-service partner organizations that receive monthly distributions. It was in response to the impressive work by Bread of Life to feed the hungry and homeless in the metro-north area that brought them to the attention of Community Cooks.  Based in Malden, Bread of Life is a faith-based organization that offers: Free evening meals Tuesday through Friday in Malden. Food pantries in Malden and Everett. Grocery distribution to seniors in Malden, Everett, Melrose, Medford and Wakefield public housing. Food distribution to homeless families temporarily sheltered in local motels. Mobile outreach to homeless and clothing ministry. Community supported agriculture? Get those hands dirty

JUST FOOD PLEASE CSA (community supported agriculture) is a relatively new phenomenon in the U.S. introduced in the early to mid-1980s. Thanks to the introduction by Robyn Van En at Indian Line Farm in S. Egremonot, MA, the CSA concept in North America was born. WHAT IS A CSA? In Massachusetts nearly every town has a CSA community that consists of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes the community’s farm. Typically, members, often called “share holders” of the farm pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm and the farmer’s salary. Also, the share holders share the risks as well; poor harvests due to bad weather, pests and the like. The big picture promises better produce and selection with farm to table choices that have not spent their lives in box cars and gassed beyond consumptive value. MALDEN’S CHEFS: David Stein and Stock Pot Malden, Part 2

While David Stein was creating his business at Triangle, Inc., Francis Gouillart, academic, business consultant, and co-author of “The Power of Co-Creation” and his group of angel investors were exploring Malden as a possible city to put the theory of co-creation to work on a local level. “Co-creation is a management initiative, or form of economic strategy, that brings different parties together (for instance a company and a group of customers) in order to jointly produce a mutually valued outcome.” As a blue-collar city and the second most ethnically diverse in Massachusetts, Malden fit the criteria as a community they wanted to work with. Their goal was to try a social experiment by empowering people, especially women and minorities, through food service, by reaching out to Malden food businesses and supporting them by encouraging, coaching, and investing in start-up businesses as equity partners, hiring from the community and supporting community growth in food service. MALDEN CHEFS: David Stein and Stock Pot Malden

Long-time Malden resident, David Stein, is as warm and colorful as his red-flowered pants.  We spoke at the Polka Dot Commissary on Pearl Street where he described his life as a chef, entrepreneur, musician and partial owner of Stock Pot Malden. In 1976, David Stein was washing dishes in Mystic Seaport at Howard Johnson’s on the highway.  “I liked the line cooks,” he remembers.  “They were cool.”  A year later he was working at his first cooking job, part-time, in the cafeteria where he attended college. He moved to Indiana and in the late 1970s, to the San Francisco bay area around the time when Alice Waters opened Chez Panisse, the first farm to market restaurant, and the California New American cuisine movement began to take off.  By this time he had been a line cook in a steak restaurant while playing music with his wife, both semi-professional musicians, and had cooked at a few other jobs.  He realized his passion for both cooking and music and that working as a cook allowed him to play the […]
