Idle Hands opens brewery and taproom in Malden

Mmmm, beer good. When Idle Hands Craft Ales was kicked out of its Everett home last summer to make way for Wynn Resorts Casino, co-owner and brewer Chris Tkach expanded operations to the more spacious location at 89 Commercial Street which is a stone’s throw from the Malden Center MBTA station. Idle Hands had their grand “re-opening” on Thursday, July 7 and Tkach, along with his wife Grace, are happy with the results. “We were desperate to find a new location, so we put out feelers to a lot of cities and towns,” Tkach said. “We reached out to Kevin Duffy and sure enough, we found this wonderful property right here. It’s a perfect fit for what we’re looking to do.” The result? Pure craft beer success. Idle Hands Craft Ales has perfected their complex amber-color concoctions and local restaurants, like Nicole and Bryan Palazzolo from Mystic Station, plan to team up with the local brewery by providing food options and food trucks will regularly offer some mobile meals to hungry patrons. Cultural Immersion Program sparks creativity in local high school students

High expectations are in the air for today’s college-bound students. At Malden’s High Expectations, the Cultural Immersion Program helps high school students strengthen their college profile and communication skills while working together to create a video production of an original play. Many of these students are English language learners (“ELL”) and are enhancing their English through this program. I was able to watch the rehearsal of their play, which is a team effort involving plot twists and what the instructors describe as a “philosophical ending.” High Expectations’ founder, Lynn A. Leonard, is enthusiastic about both the creative and academic components of the Cultural Immersion Program. An attorney specializing in Civil Rights and Children & Family law, Leonard created High Expectations to provide strategic college planning services such as standardized test preparation to ELL students and enable them to explore their interests and aspirations. Celebrate Fourth of July weekend in Malden

The Malden Public Library will display the original and the newly digitized version of Malden’s town records from the Revolutionary war period. Featured will be the May 27, 1776 document entitled “Instructions of the Inhabitants of Malden, Massachusetts to their Representatives in Congress” unanimously voted on by the townspeople of Malden to be delivered to the Second Continental Congress via their representative Ezra Sargeant. In the 1776 communication, the voting citizens of Malden renounce the Colony’s ties to the Kingdom of Great Britain and set forth their wish to become an independent “American” republic. The document is credited as a precursor to the Declaration of Independence written in July of 1776 when the Continental Congress formally declared their independence from England. The original historical document will remain on display for viewing. The facts about the safety of electronic cigarettes are still pending further study. This article is to inform readers of the facts that are presently known. The history of e-cigarettes dates back to 1963, when Herbert A. Gilbert invented and patented an electronic device. This did not catch on with the public, in some ways because smoking was still very acceptable. And the dangers of tobacco were not known to the public. In 2003, a Chinese pharmacist named Han Lik developed a method enabling smokers to have nicotine without smoke, tobacco or the chemicals found in cigarettes. Lik worked on this after his father died of lung cancer. The company he worked for backed his invention and gave it the name Ruyan, which means “like smoke.” This device became popular in China, and soon moved on to Europe. In 2007, the e-cigarette made it to the U.S. The e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that vaporizes a flavored liquid and delivers the vapor to the lungs via inhalation.
