Malden Reads thanks community for “Stargazing” success

In celebration of exploring space, related to this year’s book selection, The Martian by Andy Weir, Malden Reads held an event called “Sunset, Storytelling, & Stargazing” at Waitt’s Mount Park in Malden on Saturday, April 30. Well over 100 attendees, representing the incredibly diverse population of Malden, trekked to the top of Waitt’s Mount to watch the sunset, listen to stories, and look at Jupiter, its moons, a star cluster, and more through the help of six different telescopes and accompanying guides. Speaking about his dramatic and arduous rescue, the main character in The Martian states: “They did it because every human being has a basic instinct to help each other out. It might not seem that way sometimes, but it’s true.” We certainly feel that is true, and we have so many individuals and organizations to thank for a truly successful evening that, besides stargazing, celebrated sharing stories and coming together as a community. The facts about the safety of electronic cigarettes are still pending further study. This article is to inform readers of the facts that are presently known. The history of e-cigarettes dates back to 1963, when Herbert A. Gilbert invented and patented an electronic device. This did not catch on with the public, in some ways because smoking was still very acceptable. And the dangers of tobacco were not known to the public. In 2003, a Chinese pharmacist named Han Lik developed a method enabling smokers to have nicotine without smoke, tobacco or the chemicals found in cigarettes. Lik worked on this after his father died of lung cancer. The company he worked for backed his invention and gave it the name Ruyan, which means “like smoke.” This device became popular in China, and soon moved on to Europe. In 2007, the e-cigarette made it to the U.S. The e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that vaporizes a flavored liquid and delivers the vapor to the lungs via inhalation. When asked what a song about Malden would be, singer songwriter, producer, performer Peter Moore gave the perfect answer, “It depends on who asks for it.” Peter Moore is as versatile, creative, edgy, and adaptive as artists get… able to bend styles, experiment with sound, inject quirks, and apply variety to the need. He intrigues listeners whether singing on stage with Blue Man Group or performing with his current rock band Count Zero, producing a kickstarter-funded rock opera, Heterotopia, writing songs that were picked up by video games such as Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero, or songs like Hire a Bird that rail against the destruction of the earth and reach the Top 500 Songs of All Time on Boston radio station WFNX. There is no doubt, Peter Moore could provide a number of songs for Malden in styles to suit our colorful demographic makeup and sensibilities. Malden and Everett tackle the trail together

Two neighboring communities connected by the Northern Strand Trail joined forces to clear overgrown brush and overblown trash for their Earth Day efforts on April 23. Over 100 people from Malden and Everett gathered under stormy skies. Tee shirts were handed out as people signed in. Spirits were high as progress was observed and tallied. Malden High probes social issues in original play

MATV is now running the full-length recording of the original play performed by Malden High School Play Production for the Massachusetts State Dramafest held in February-March 2016. The group advanced past the preliminary round in the competitive festival, which brings together students from across the state who are involved in theater. You can watch a few clips from the show below and see the whole production through MATV’s video-on-demand. Viewer discretion is advised. The following article was written by Nada Tufaha for Malden High School’s news source, the Blue & Gold. Malden High School Play Production held a show on Feb. 25, 2016 called “All The King’s Actors”. This show was entered in the Theatre Guild’s High School Dramatic Festival competition. SEBIO featured on “Release The Sounds”

It’s a new month, which means Release the Sounds is featuring a new local band. For May, we have SEBIO in our studio. SEBIO (SEE-be-oh) is a four-piece band that has been together for just over a year but they sound like they’ve been together since high school. Stephan Nordgren is the driving force behind the currently-available EP, In Hardwood Groves, writing and playing the instruments in the recordings. James F. Forbes, the guitarist, met and connected with Stephan in a Craigslist transaction that went very right for once (details in the episode). James brought bassist, Erica Belden, and drummer, Brett Pieper, into the mix to round out the performing lineup. Their atmospheric and driving set takes us on a continuous journey of peaks and valleys which finally concludes with a chugging, anthemic climax. The chemistry of the band is undeniable on stage and off. We find out more about them in a fun curbside interview in the May edition of Release the Sounds. Trail of Gears: Winslow’s journey to bike to the sea

The Pacific Ocean loomed just over the Santa Cruz Mountains about thirty miles away in California. Growing up in San Jose, Steve Winslow yearned to ride over the mountains to the coastline, but it never happened. Later in 1989, as a married couple, Helen and Steve Winslow moved from the bicycling nirvana of Davis, California to Malden as a most convenient place to commute to work in Boston. Winslow recalls, “I remember trying to bike up Washington Street to Melrose and it was horrible.” The Winslows were appalled by the local horrendous biking conditions and the resulting lack of cyclists. It was time for change in their new community. Winslow explored the abandoned railroad bed running through Malden. He followed it to where he could smell the salt marshes of Revere. Winslow reflects,“We are really close to the ocean and wouldn’t it be great to bike to the beach!” This would be such an easy and fun ride with a total elevation of 108 feet. Sunset, Storytelling and Stargazing on Waitt’s Mount

Malden Reads will hold a special all-ages event for the 2016 program—“Sunset, Storytelling and Stargazing on Waitt’s Mount”—to be held Saturday, April 30, weather permitting. The community is invited to the top of Waitt’s Mount Park in Malden (off Leonard Street) to watch the sunset, hear storytelling (for children) and gaze at the stars with the help of the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston (ATMoB). Professional storyteller Sharon Kennedy will begin telling stories at 7:30 p.m. with sunset occurring at 7:43 p.m. Parents with young children may only want to stay for the storytelling portion, but are welcome to stay longer. Stargazing will start after twilight, around 8:30 p.m. One or more telescopes will be set up for viewing and a member of the ATMoB will serve as a guide to the night sky. Clean up at Waitt’s Mount with Ryan O’Malley

In honor of Earth Day and preparing for the Malden Reads “Sunset, Storytelling and Stargazing on Waitt’s Mount” event on April 30, there will be a clean up at Waitt’s Mount Saturday, April 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ward 4 Councilor Ryan O’Malley will host the event at the recently-renovated Waitt’s Mountain Park. This is a chance, he says, to meet your neighbors and enjoy the amazing view atop the Mount. Refreshments and pizza will be provided. The clean up will help get the park ready for the summer and the Malden Reads stargazing event that will happen the following week at the park. The DPW will provide trash bags and a limited number of equipment/tools. But, bring your own gloves/tools if you have them. Waitt’s Mount is located near 79 Leonard St., Malden. Parking is available at the park and on Leonard and Tremont streets.
