The Great Malden Outdoors: Making outdoor recreation more accessible to communities of color
By Nia Harmon Cities across the United States saw an increased use of outdoor spaces during the COVID-19 Pandemic, including the Greater Boston area. However, these outdoor spaces have not been maximized by all communities based on what is called “The Adventure Gap,” which measures the percentage between different groups that participate in outdoor activities in comparison to their makeup of the U.S. population. Working towards bridging that gap in the city of Malden is Darren Josey, founder and CEO of First Seed Sown, a sales and marketing company, and the new outdoor education and empowerment campaign, The Great Malden Outdoors. The campaign is designed to help break down barriers of entry to outdoor sporting for communities of color. No save files. At Boda Borg, you are the protagonist. The gaming experience chain traces its start back to Torpshammar, Sweden. Today, that is one of the country’s seven locations. MLK Luncheon will honor MATV’s Terlonzo Amos and other luminaries
MATV’s Director of Operation Terlonzo Amos will be one of the six honorees at the 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon sponsored by the North Shore Black Women’s Association (NSBWA). The event will be held on Saturday, January 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Anthony’s of Malden. The other five honorees are Marcus Darbouze, journalist; Arthur Kahn, gemologist; Keith Knight, Jr., cartoonist; Maria Luise, Assistant to Mayor Gary Christensen and Dorothy Martin Long, community activist. The much beloved annual event is a homage to the slain civil rights leader and a fundraiser for the NSBWA, with all proceeds supporting college scholarships for local high school seniors. Terlonzo Amos, a longtime Malden resident and graduate of Malden High School, is currently the Director of Operations at MATV, Malden’s Media Center, an organization whose mission is “Building Community Through Media.” But Terlonzo’s involvement with giving back to his community started long before his tenure with MATV. It’s a goal for the H4H hockey tournament
The morning began as a wet, drizzly, raw November day but once the various teams arrived from almost every neighborhood in Malden, the day took on a remarkable change. The grey mist turned into a parade of bright and colorful hockey jerseys worn by old-school buddies coming together to remember a friend and play some old fashion street hockey for a good cause. It was the fourth time the annual “Home for the Holidays Street Hockey Tournament” was being held and this year, according to one of the organizers Chris Rosa, what started out as a small group of pals playing some pickup games turned into a 10-team tournament that raised over $4,000. The money is going to the Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey organization and this year the event honored the memory of Joe Vaitkevicious aka ”Bones,” who just a few months ago at the age of 41, lost his life to cancer. Now an update on the Malden sport stories we’re following in May at Neighborhood View: Update for: Put Me in Coach Interview with Martin Horkan from 5/1/14: https://neighborhoodview.org/2014/05/01/put-me-in-coach-with-martin-horkan/ Coach Marty Horkan led his Mystic Valley Regional Charter School Boy’s Lacrosse team to a victory vs. Nashoba Regional on 5/13/14. Besides being the MV Eagles 13th win of the season, it is Coach Horkan’s 100th career win. Only 300+ more wins to catch up to hall of fame Coach Rick Mazzei. Congratulations Coach Horkan! Now an update on the Malden sport stories we’ve brought to you so far in May here at Neighborhood View: Update for: Put Me in Coach Interview with Martin Horkan from 5/1/14: https://neighborhoodview.org/2014/05/01/put-me-in-coach-with-martin-horkan/ The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School Eagles lacrosse team, led by Coach Marty Horkan qualified for the Division 3 State Tournament with their 9th win of the season over Greater Lowell. The Eagles also clinched the Commonwealth Large Conference with their 10th victory of the season over the New England Vocational Tech Knights. The Eagles continue their formula for success as the players of Coach Horkan defeated the students of Mr. Horkan, who besides being the boy’s lacrosse coach at MV is also the chemistry teacher at NE Vocational. The Eagles next take on Whittier Vocation at home on Friday 5/9. NCAA Spring LAX Tournaments Include Malden Athletes Pt. 2 of 2
So continuing with NCAA spring tournament participants (see NCAA Spring LAX Tournaments Include Malden Athletes Pt. 1 of 2) Malden has one son playing in the NCAA Division II lacrosse tournament: Blake Ferry, who was a 2013 captain of the Malden Catholic Lancers boy’s lacrosse team where he was named a Catholic Conference All-Star and played all four years, will play for his Limestone Saints. They will host the Queens University of Charlotte, NC. in the first round of the tournament for the South Region at home in Gaffney, SC on May 10th. Blake is a Freshman Midfielder with 3 goals and 1 assist this season, standing 5’10” and majoring in Business Administration. Limestone is making its fifteenth NCAA tournament appearance. NOTE: Based on research there are currently no Malden Men’s DI or Women’s DI – DIII players in the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament in 2014.
