Nathan Lamb leaving helm at Malden Observer … again

Feel like you saw this article before? MATV’s Neighborhood View caught up with Nathan Lamb when he left his position back in the fall. He returned a couple of weeks later and explains what happened below. But now it looks like he’s leaving the post for good. We wish him well and caught up with him one more time. First off, Nathan, where are you headed? Anne– first I really want to thank you for your interest. You and Ron Cox and everyone at MATV have been great media partners throughout my tenure in Malden and I did want to thank you again for that. I’ve taken a position as a site editor at a company named Tech Target in Newton. Our mission centers on providing reliable information for companies looking to solve problems with technology. An honest conversation of Ferguson and beyond

On Saturday, December 13, 2014, Mai Du, of Wah Lum Academy in Malden, brought a call to action from the community. Du hosted a forum entitled An Honest Conversation of Ferguson and Beyond. She wanted teens and children to speak their thoughts on the happenings of late, and to get more involved. The group of about 75 people consisted of teens, younger children and adults. The program was facilitated by a group of teens. In the beginning, large blank papers were placed around the room for participants to place stick-ums on, according to categories ie. Fears, Hopes, Questions, etc. The leaders reviewed what had happened in Ferguson, with the known facts. Then participants were given a pre-determined subject to discuss in small groups of 5 or 6. People were grouped with diverse ages, races and ethnicities. The groups were given about 20 minutes to discuss among themselves. Captivating artwork of Ming Huang Zhang .. now showing in the MATV Gallery

The MATV Gallery is exhibiting the work of Ming Huang Zhang, a participating artist in this year’s Window Arts Malden through January 2015. Zhang hails from China and immigrated to the United States in 2011. The work in this exhibit features his oil portraits which are painted in a western style but display subjects and details that are distinctly Eastern. Also on exhibit will be a number of his portrait sketches using a charcoal medium, a favorite of the artist. Zhang frequents Harvard Square where he finds plenty of people to pose for his sketches, which typically take about 15 minutes to complete yet are captivating in their level of fine detail and likeness to the original face. Says Zhang, “I live in Boston and I love this beautiful city. I have liked drawing since I was a preschool child. Every day, I drew on the road with small stones because my parents did not have enough money to buy drawing equipment for me.” In 2010, Zhang drew a giant mural (300 square meters) for the […]

Henrietta Lacks’ story moves audiences at Malden Reads ‘Dessert Theater’

It was an electrifying evening in Malden on Monday, November 10. The cafeteria of Triangle, Inc. at 420 Pearl St. was transformed into an elegant cafe with lamps and candlelight replacing the overhead fluorescents. The opening to the kitchen was covered by grey-mottled panels and formed the backdrop for a theatrical presentation that left the over 70 attendees to the free event profoundly moved by its power and intensity. Malden Reads: One City, One Book in collaboration with the North Shore Black Women’s Association presented a staged reading of an original play, “Henrietta,” based on the 2014 Malden Reads book selection The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Written by poet, musician, songwriter and (now) playwright Licia Sky, the reading was a moving tribute to the African-American woman whose cancer cells were taken without her knowledge in the 1950s at Johns Hopkins Hospital and have been multiplied and used worldwide since that time to further the field of medical science. MATV wins four regional video awards

MATV, Malden’s Media Center, landed four awards in a recent video festival held in Nashua, New Hampshire sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media Northeast Region.The annual event, held on October 11, featured hundreds of students, professionals and citizens from all over New England and New York to compete for best video in 20 categories. MATV’s Executive Director Ron Cox and Program/Volunteer Coordinator James Mudge attended the ceremony to receive “Best Entertainment” in the professional division for a video Ron produced for last year’s MATV Annual Meeting called “Back to the Future.” The video was a spoof based on the well-loved film trilogy. Mr. Cox, who played himself in the video did the writing and editing and James Mudge who played “Doc” was the camera operator. The second first-place video was for “A Visit with Dairy Delight” which won “Best Profile Documentary” in the professional division. Local election night wrap-up on MATV

Catch the local wrap-up of election news on MATV starting at 7:30 p.m. on Election Day (Tuesday, November 4). Tune in to MATV’s Government Access Channel (Comcast – 22, Verizon – 26) to hear political commentary from former City Councilor Greg Lucey, former Malden Observer editor Nathan Lamb and Malden Advocate reporter Juhi Varma with host MATV Executive Director Ron Cox. Election returns from the local polls will start coming in when the polls close at 8:00 p.m. The discussion will center on the local races for State Representative but will also touch on how the statewide races and ballot questions are felt locally. The major race of local interest is the State Representative race between candidates Steve Ultrino (Democrat) and John Matheson (Independent) for most of Malden’s voting precincts. Malden also has hometown candidate David D’Arcangelo running for Secretary of the Commonwealth. If Girl Scouts ring your bell this Sunday …

“Trick-or-Treat So Others Can Eat” program will take place in Malden. Malden Girl Scouts will be taking part in the “Trick-or-Treat So Others Can Eat” program this Sunday, October 26 from 2-4 p.m. If they appear at your door, please donate canned goods or money to help local folks in need. The Girl Scouts will be collecting these items for the Bread of Life, which runs a meal program and a food pantry in Malden. Last day on the job for Malden Observer editor Nathan Lamb

Nathan Lamb stepped into the role of editor at the Malden Observer in the summer of 2011 just a few months before Gary Christenson was elected mayor. Three years is actually a long tenure for that post. Neighborhood View caught up with him as he prepares to leave the position. What will you miss most about the job? These things are always kind of bittersweet. I’m excited to start at a new job but I’ll miss the stories that take place every day here. I’ll miss meeting such a variety of great people in Malden and being out and about in the community. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know some great organizations in Malden like the Bread of Life, the Immigrant Learning Center, Triangle, and MATV. I’ve also been fortunate to work with a great team of regular contributors who’ve helped me fill the paper, week-in and week-out, so I guess now is a good time to thank them! Where will you be going? Corita Kent Exhibit in Memory of Joan Aliberti at the Malden Public Library

An exhibit of works by renowned artist Corita Kent is on display at the Malden Public Library in the Lower Gallery of the Converse Memorial Building. The works were donated in memory of longtime Malden resident Joan Aliberti after her death in 2002 by her mother Tina Aliberti. Corita Kent, also known as Sister Mary Corita, is the artist behind the brightly colored gas tanks in Dorchester that are seen along the Southeast Expressway. Known as the Rainbow Swash, the painting on the gas tanks comprise the largest piece of copyrighted artwork in the world. A similar design was used for the artist’s widely recognized 1985 Love stamp. Kent has an extensive body of work that incorporates abstract color, collage, and writing, expressing values of peace and social justice. Her works are included in collections at The Whitney, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Joan Aliberti, a Malden educator, was a friend of the late artist and held a number of her works in her personal collection. The pieces […]

Frank Stella re-connects with hometown Malden

As a boy growing up in Malden, renowned artist Frank Stella remembers passing his time at the Malden Public Library and playing outside with friends along what is now the Northern Strand Bike Trail. Stella, who was born in 1936, left Malden for New York City in 1958 after graduating from Oberlin College and never returned, making his mark on the art world with his abstract paintings, sculpture, and geometric designs. His work has shown widely throughout the world, including the Guggenheim and Museum of Modern Art in New York City. On March 18, 2014, Stella returned to the area to accept an award from WalkBoston for the Walkability Initiative propelled by Malden resident Sharon Santillo in collaboration with Mayor Gary Christenson. Stella’s artwork is incorporated in the wayfaring signs that promote walking in Malden. WalkBoston, which awarded the trio (Santillo, Christenson, and Stella) with the organization’s “Golden Shoe” award, noted that Malden’s walking initiative was the first to combine walkability with art.
