James Labbe, captain of the Salvation Army located at 213 Main St. in Malden, talked with Neighborhood View‘s Richard Umbro on February 12, 2016. Here’s the interview: Our meeting was impromptu and rather brief. His handshake was firm and his demeanor was informal, yet sincere. My first question was a bit clumsy due to my inexperience and limited expertise in this type of venue. However, his presence had a calming quality and effect. UMBRO: The title, “captain,” before your name conjures up a military countenance. How was the name derived? LABBE: The term “captain” originates from the “Army of Salvationists.” It’s not to be construed as militaristic, only symbolic. The purpose and intent of the “army” was and still is the salvation of the poor, the destitute, the homeless, the hungry and those who have chosen the wrong path. The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, in the East End of London, England by an itinerant Methodist minister. Re-envisioning community media in Malden

Sue Buske, a consultant for MATV and the City of Malden, gave an information-sharing presentation on community media centers across the country that incorporate the arts, art resources and nonprofit collaboratives. Buske, an experienced negotiator specializing in cable regulation and renewals, is looking at opportunities to re-envision the future of community media in Malden. Seeking community engagement, Buske is spearheading several focus groups to explore the future of cable service, community media and technology. The four focus groups will be held March 1-2 at various locations in Malden. These focus groups are part of the city of Malden and Malden Access TV’s cable franchise renewal process with Comcast. “Inside Malden” with Ose Schwab profiles Sifu Mai Du

Mai Du, Founder and Sifu of the Wah Lum Kung Fu and Tai Chi Academy in Malden, jokes that her American dream started out as a nightmare at Logan Airport. Only eight, exhausted from a long trip from Vietnam via the Philippines, she arrived with her family in the United States on Halloween night. Despite this spooky start, Du has established herself in the United States not only as a Vietnamese-Chinese-American but a nationally recognized youth organizer and activist, one of the few female certified Wah Lum Kung Fu instructors in the Greater Boston Area, Founder and Sifu of a thriving award-winning Kung Fu and Tai Chi academy in Malden, owner/teacher of a math and reading school, and founder of numerous local and national advocacy groups and coalitions. Anthony Savino featured on “Release the Sounds”

Providence-based artist Anthony Savino has been playing the guitar for about 14 years, and in that time he has developed a swift, craftsman-like fingerpicking style. He has devoted much of the past decade to making and releasing original work, though his showcase with RTS features almost exclusively as-yet unreleased material, including a song which he wrote as part of the score for Spanish short film based on Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. His approach ranges from lively, gentle and bright as in Red Bird, to pastoral folk pacings that make me somehow homesick as in What You Read. Focus groups will shape the future of Malden Access TV

The Malden community is invited to participate in a series of focus groups that will explore the future of cable service, community media and technology. The four focus groups will be held March 1-2 at various locations in Malden. These focus groups are part of the city of Malden and Malden Access TV’s cable franchise renewal process with Comcast. PHOTOS: Fresh Truck mobile market hits Malden

Fresh Truck, a re-purposed school bus that carries fresh and affordable fruits, vegetables, whole grain products and more, made a pit stop at the Malden YMCA on Thursday, Jan. 14. Christina Murphy, the Mass in Motion Coordinator for the City of Malden, negotiated the pop up and the team behind the mobile market, including CEO Josh Trautwein, rolled into Malden from 3 to 5 p.m. last week. Elizabeth Scorsello, a reporter with MATV’s Neighborhood View and photographer for the citizen journalism site, said the converted bus was packed. “It was so cold,” Scorsello explained. “But it was impressive how many people showed up to the market.” –Photographs by Elizabeth Scorsello

Inside Malden: Ideas and Stories That Inspire

Blog, TV show and podcast premieres this month Community resident Ose Schwab aims to “introduce Malden to itself” with a local groundbreaking multi-media program that features in-depth personal stories that inspire. The one-hour interview format show premieres this month on MATV Public Access (Comcast 3, Verizon 28) and online with an accompanying blog on MATV’s citizen journalism site Neighborhood View (neighborhoodview.org). It is also available as a podcast (downloadable or streamed) from the Neighborhood View site. Temporary construction barrier collapses on Pleasant Street

A mother was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, December 15 when a temporary construction barrier made out of plywood fell outside of the old Granada Theatre building and former dollar store located at 21 Pleasant St. The mother’s two-year-old child was unscathed by the collapse. According to reports, the injuries were minor. One source told MATV’s Neighborhood View that the wall fell on the baby’s stroller but the little one was protected by the frame of the stroller. The facade fell on five people in total, including the woman and uninjured child. A wind gust is believed to be responsible for the facade’s collapse. The building has a history of bizarre events. The Granada Theatre closed in the mid-’80s and was later demolished after two girls snuck in the building in 1987 and set a fire that destroyed the historic structure.

It’s a goal for the H4H hockey tournament

The morning began as a wet, drizzly, raw November day but once the various teams arrived from almost every neighborhood in Malden, the day took on a remarkable change. The grey mist turned into a parade of bright and colorful hockey jerseys worn by old-school buddies coming together to remember a friend and play some old fashion street hockey for a good cause. It was the fourth time the annual “Home for the Holidays Street Hockey Tournament” was being held and this year, according to one of the organizers Chris Rosa, what started out as a small group of pals playing some pickup games turned into a 10-team tournament that raised over $4,000. The money is going to the Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey organization and this year the event honored the memory of Joe Vaitkevicious aka ”Bones,” who just a few months ago at the age of 41, lost his life to cancer.
