TV SHOW: Special Halloween edition of “What’s New?”

In this special Halloween edition of Neighborhood View’s “What’s New?” Go behind the scenes of one of the state’s most haunted locations, the USS Salem in Quincy, and learn about world-class haunted house attraction called Ghost Ship Harbor. Travel back in time with Salem Witch Trials expert Kathryn Rutkowski who will talk about the spooktacular new event called The Haunting at Witch Hill in Topsfield. Co-hosts Sam Baltrusis and Sharon Fillyaw chat with “Halloween Nation” author Lesley Bannatyne about trends associated with All Hallow’s Eve. The monthly program airs 6:30 p.m. Fridays, Noon Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays on MATV’s Channel 3 on Comcast, 28 (Verizon). The special Halloween-themed edition will be available to public access stations across the state by DVD or digital download on October 1, 2016.

With Halloween creeping around the corner, the team from What’s New? assembled a motley crew of spooktacular events scattered throughout the Bay State. With our seven deadly picks for Halloween, we promise plenty of tricks and treats throughout October. MATV’s HAUNTED STUDIO: Coming in at No. 7 is Malden Media Center’s annual event the Haunted Studio. Kids and parents from the Malden Community trick or treat their way through MATV’s creepy maze of spooks held on Halloween weekend. OLD SCHOOL GAME SHOW: At No. 6 is Old School Game Show’s Halloween edition in Cambridge. Michael D’Angelo, host of the devilishly camp Old School Game Show, serves up 1970s-era slasher-flick sensibility in this killer live theater/game show cacophony which includes Boston’s burlesque queen Ginny Nightshade. Malden Reads mulls book pick for 2017

The Malden Reads Book Selection Committee has been busy reading all summer as they considered the contenders for the 2017 pick. The popular One City, One Book program will be entering its seventh year of promoting literacy, encouraging a love of reading and building community in the city of Malden. The program is organized collaboratively by MATV, Malden’s Media Center, and the Malden Public Library in collaboration with a dynamic group of community volunteers. Whittled down from a long list of suggestions from the community, here are the top 10 contenders: Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates Using letters to his teenage son, Coates talks in lyrical, yet uncompromising, prose about race in America and how it has shaped our history. BEYOND BOSTON TV show launches with Chris Faraone

Hosted by DigBoston’s features editor and Boston Institute of Non-Profit Journalism (BINJ) co-founder Chris Faraone, BEYOND BOSTON is a monthly news magazine collaboration spotlighting the reporting from regional community access centers including BIG in Brookline, CCTV in Cambridge, MATV in Malden and SCATV in Somerville. The pilot episode, produced by MATV’s Sam Baltrusis and SCATV’s Erica Jones, is airing on multiple public access stations in August 2016. “As BINJ moves into its second year, you will see lots of vids and podcasts and more. Starting with ‘Beyond Boston,’ a monthly showcase (hosted by me and the BINJ crew, produced by Sam Baltrusis of Malden Access Television and Erica Jones of SCATV in Somerville) of the best content that community access stations around Boston have to offer,” Faraone said. “There are more than 100 such stations in Mass alone, and this is an effort to get a whole bunch of them on the same page. Alternative and community news outlets can have a big impact, but only when we work together like this,” he continued.

Community N’ Unity vigil unites Malden

Malden responded to the violence in the U.S. with a powerful Community N’ Unity vigil on Wednesday, July 20 outside of Malden High School. Michelle Brooks-Thompson, a contestant on the third season of “The Voice,” sang a song titled, “Stand up for Love.” People who participated in the vigil did take a stand for love … holding hands in a powerful display of unity. Mayor Gary Christenson kicked off the vigil by thanking the community’s religious leaders for organizing the peaceful gathering. “I was inspired by their commitment and willingness to step forward to plan this event,” said Christenson. “In light of the violence and divisiveness that has gripped our nation, they were determined to bring our community together and help deliver a message of unity, hope and peace.” Neighborhood View interviews participants at the community vigil:

Malden Public Library’s historic gates restored

The Malden Public Library’s historic wrought-iron gates have been restored to their original condition and returned to the Salem Street entrance where they have enclosed the walled garden, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, at the front entrance, since 1911. They were designed by Ludvig Sandoe Ipsen, purchased in 1910 from a $1,000 donation from Mrs. Lillie A.B. Hill of Malden and produced by W.A. Snow Iron Work, Inc. L.S. Ipsen, decorative artist, was born in Denmark and a graduate of the Academy of Architecture in Copenhagen. He arrived in Boston around 1867 and eventually moved to Malden. Expressing himself most famously in the decorative arts and illustration, Ipsen was most noted for his book covers, book titles and book plates according to The American Bookmaker, July, 1886. His illustrated work of “Sonnets from the Portuguese,” by E.B Browning (Tribner & Co.), was described as having been decorated “with exquisite draughtmanship and engraving and designed with taste and grace such as we rarely find surpassed” by The Athenaeum Journal of Literature, Science, The Fine Arts, Music […]

Expert Larry Cultrera discusses Malden-area diners

Larry Cultrera, author of two books on classic diners, said it was love at first sight when it comes to his life-long passion. “The writing was way down the road from my initial interest,” Cultrera told What’s New Malden. “I was interested in diners from the time I was a little kid, probably four or five years old. My dad told me about diners, that they are actually pre-fabricated restaurants. They look somewhat like railroad cars but they’re not railroad cars or converted railroad cars.” Cultrera, who grew up in Medford and is currently living in Saugus, said he would love to spot diners when his father drove him around the Boston area. “I noticed all of the diners that we had at that time in the ’50s and early ’60s,” he recalled. “And as time went on they started to disappear. By 1980 I was getting into photography and I started photographing diners as a documentation type of a thing.” Over the past 36 years, Cultrera photographed more than 800 diners.
