In honor of the 10th anniversary of Malden Media Center’s Open House Showcase, MATV’s Neighborhood View unleashed a LIVE version of its 30-minute magazine-style TV show called “What’s New? Malden” on Wednesday, May 11 at 7: 30 p.m. Hosted by Sam Baltrusis from MATV’s Neighborhood View, the monthly program showcases Malden’s new restaurants, cutting-edge businesses and positive news emerging from the city. The May 2016 edition of “What’s New? Malden” features the behind-the-scenes players of MATV’s Open House Showcase including Executive Director Ron Cox and Education Access Coordinator Hailey Hao. Ose Schwab is interviewed by her son, Liam, about the May edition of “Inside Malden” with musician Peter Moore. ”What’s New? Malden” also spotlights Malden’s Japanese fusion restaurant Sousaku Bistro and reports from the Chamber’s Taste of Malden. The facts about the safety of electronic cigarettes are still pending further study. This article is to inform readers of the facts that are presently known. The history of e-cigarettes dates back to 1963, when Herbert A. Gilbert invented and patented an electronic device. This did not catch on with the public, in some ways because smoking was still very acceptable. And the dangers of tobacco were not known to the public. In 2003, a Chinese pharmacist named Han Lik developed a method enabling smokers to have nicotine without smoke, tobacco or the chemicals found in cigarettes. Lik worked on this after his father died of lung cancer. The company he worked for backed his invention and gave it the name Ruyan, which means “like smoke.” This device became popular in China, and soon moved on to Europe. In 2007, the e-cigarette made it to the U.S. The e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that vaporizes a flavored liquid and delivers the vapor to the lungs via inhalation. MATV’s Neighborhood View will premiere the first episode of its 30-minute magazine-style TV show called “What’s New? Malden” on Friday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m. Hosted by Sam Baltrusis from MATV’s Neighborhood View, the monthly program will showcase Malden’s new restaurants, cutting-edge businesses and positive news emerging from the city. Whether we like or not, Malden is changing. This monthly program will shine a spotlight on the city’s evolving landscape and will highlight the events and players responsible for Malden’s growth. The April 2016 edition of “What’s New? Malden” features Ose Schwab from Inside Malden, Jodie Zalk from Malden Reads, Sharon Fillyaw from Shape Up Malden and Liz Taegel from Release the Sounds. Singer/songwriter Shelita Burke closes out the show.”What’s New? Malden” also spotlights El Potro and Ming’s Seafood Restaurant. Shape Up Malden boot camp with Sharon Fillyaw

Sharon Fillyaw, an award-winning national bodybuilding competitor who dedicated herself to educating others about the importance of health and fitness, chatted with “What’s New? Malden” about her upcoming Shape Up Malden boot camp scheduled to begin Sunday, April 17 from 8 to 9 a.m. and will run on Sundays through May 22. Fillyaw is a national-level body builder and host of “Sharon’s Full Body and Fitness Workout” filmed right here in Malden on MATV. The April 2016 edition of “What’s New? Malden” features Ose Schwab from “Inside Malden,” Jodie Zalk from Malden Reads, Sharon Fillyaw from Shape Up Malden and Liz Taegel from Release the Sounds. Salem Wolves featured on “Release the Sounds”

March’s featured artist over at Release the Sounds is Salem Wolves. This three-piece from the North Shore delivers fuzzy, loud, punchy pop in rhythms ranging from finger-snappers to sultry throbs. They’ve been in a steady flourish of activity since their formation in the winter of 2014, releasing singles on their label, MegaHex Records, and playing constantly in and around Boston. Scenes from a holiday bazaar

The holidays may be long over but I’m left with a memory of a special event in my neighborhood, a pop-up (private) party featuring crafts from local artists in the basement of a home transformed into a Moroccan-style bazaar. On behalf of the seven artists that banded together to create this special event, I wanted to share photos and some video highlights that have not yet been shown to the public. Local artist and community activist Elena Martinez says it all started with a “WHAT IF moment.” She and local artist Bonnie Blanchard were discussing the lack of space where artists could collectively work together. As the holiday time approached, they were looking for venues to sell their work. They decided to hold a “pop-up” event in the basement of Bonnie’s home and invite guests to attend. It would be a small neighborhood event that would offer holiday arts and crafts for a two-day stint just before the holiday shopping frenzy began. Re-envisioning community media in Malden

Sue Buske, a consultant for MATV and the City of Malden, gave an information-sharing presentation on community media centers across the country that incorporate the arts, art resources and nonprofit collaboratives. Buske, an experienced negotiator specializing in cable regulation and renewals, is looking at opportunities to re-envision the future of community media in Malden. Seeking community engagement, Buske is spearheading several focus groups to explore the future of cable service, community media and technology. The four focus groups will be held March 1-2 at various locations in Malden. These focus groups are part of the city of Malden and Malden Access TV’s cable franchise renewal process with Comcast. They provide a chance for interested community members to learn about franchise renewal and share their opinions about future services that could be available to the community through the Comcast cable system.
